GENERAL INFORMATION

Class Levels

Currently, our school has 6 levels (classes) for children 5 years of age and older. Children are placed in these classes based on their understanding and ability to speak Greek. The prerequisites, objectives and requirements of each level are summarized briefly below:

Level 1 – TAXH A: “Let’s Sing”

Objectives: This class is designed to introduce children to basic Greek sounds and rhythms, and to nurture in each child an early appreciation of Greek language through song and play.

Methods: Singing group songs, playing interactive games and activities, presenting audiovisual material, reading picture books.

Requirements: Homework assigned on a regular basis requires involvement by parents or grandparents (or some other adult who knows Greek) to reinforce material taught during the week.

Evaluations: Periodic testing and evaluation of students will be conducted.

Level 2 – TAXH B: “Show Me the Letters”

Prerequisites: Children entering this level must have basic understanding of Greek sounds and rhythms as well as a limited vocabulary.

Objectives: Children will be introduced to Greek letters and their pronunciation. Emphasis is on letter recognition with basic word structure. Students will also learn basic object identification (colors, body parts, days of weeks, months, seasons, etc….) and simple sentence structure. Elementary reading of Greek will be taught at this level.

Methods: Presenting audiovisual material, reading books, completing teacher handouts, learning poems and songs, participating in interactive activities.

Requirements: Homework assigned on a regular basis and completed on time by students. Involvement by parents or grandparents (or some other adult who knows Greek) is required to reinforce material taught during the week.

Evaluations: Periodic testing and evaluation of students will be conducted.

Level 3 – TAXH G: “Putting It Together”

Prerequisites: Children entering this level must have mastered Greek letter recognition, simple word structure as well as simple sentence structure as well as have a moderate vocabulary of Greek.

Objectives: Children will build on the concept of object naming and advance to object – word recognition. Children in this class will also be introduced to grammar basics of gender, adjective and verbs. At this level we begin conversational Greek.

Methods: Presenting audiovisual material, reading books, completing handouts, participating in interactive activities.

Requirements: Homework assigned on a regular basis and completed on time by students.

Involvement by parents or grandparents (or some other adult who knows Greek) is required to reinforce material taught during the week.

Evaluations: Periodic testing and evaluation of students will be conducted.

Level 4 – TAXH D: “Building on Strong”

Prerequisites: Children entering this level must have basic oral and written object-word recognition as well as a more extensive vocabulary of Greek.

Objectives: Students will build on Greek writing, reading and oral skills by learning simple subject – verb – object sentence structure on the present tense. Also, the children will be introduced to a more in depth study of Greek history and geography.

Methods: Presenting audiovisual material, reading books, providing handouts, participating in interactive activities.

Requirements: Homework assigned on a regular basis and completed on time by students. Involvement by parents or grandparents (or some other adult who knows Greek) is required to reinforce material taught during the week.

Evaluations: Periodic testing and evaluation of students will be conducted.

Level 5 – TAXH E: “Moving Right Along”

Prerequisites: Children entering this level must have basic Greek oral and written object-word recognition and ability to form simple sentence – verb – object sentences. Children at this level have an extensive vocabulary.

Objectives: Children will learn to build complex sentences in Greek, and will progress with Greek dialogue and reading comprehension.

Methods: Reading books, completing handouts, presenting audiovisual and interactive material.

Requirements: Homework assigned on a regular basis and completed on time by students. Involvement by parents or grandparents (or some other adult who knows Greek) is required to reinforce material taught during the week.

Evaluations: Periodic testing and evaluation of students will be conducted.

Level Adult –: “Challenge the Brain”- Adults

Prerequisites: Willingness to read, write, and speak simple Greek.

Objectives: Students will be able to carry on a simple Greek conversation; obtain basic comprehension, conjugate present tense verbs; be able to introduce themselves, ask for directions, and order food at a restaurant, and be exposed to Greek Culture.

Methods: Textbook/workbook, completing handouts, presenting interactive aids and audiovisual material, in class conversation dialogues. For more advance students, more advance materials can be made available.

Requirements: Period homework assignments to be completed on time by students.

Evaluations: Periodic in class evaluation discussion.

Level 6 – TAXH Z: “And Away We Go”

Prerequisites: Children entering this level must have the ability to read, write, and speak Greek in the present tense.

Objectives: Children will be proficient in simple Greek conversation and reading comprehension. Students in this class will be introduced to past and future tenses and advanced Greek dialogue.

Methods: Reading books, completing handouts, presenting interactive aids and audiovisual material.

Requirements: Homework assigned on regular basis and to be completed on time by students. Involvement by parents or grandparents (or some other adult who knows Greek) is required to reinforce material taught during the week.

Evaluations: Periodic testing and evaluation of students will be conducted.

Level 7

Preparation for Regent exams given in June.  Students who receive a high score can receive a language credit for college.
